The Next Chapter

June 1, 2021

In my first blog post, I wrote about my nursing career of 38 years, and how it has had different focus areas.  Different ways of using my nursing license and skills, yet all nursing. Always nursing.

I wroteat the end of my last post that it is time to leave full-time academia because I have accomplished my academic career goals.  But now what?

Introducing Schumann Nurse Consulting. Through my new company, I’ll be able to teach different populations. I can set new goals, face new challenges, and experience the thrill of the unknown and the resulting self-evaluation and self-motivation, which have served me my entire professional life.

The purpose of my new company is to 1) translate medical and nursing terminology, concepts and practice standards for non-medical and non-nursing professionals, and apply those concepts to specific cases so that they can use the information to be more successful in their own businesses; 2) assess nursing education programs and assist program administrators and faculty in implementing competencies and meeting professional accreditation standards.

What abilities and experiences can a long-time nurse, faculty member and a former Dean offer as a consultant to lawyers or other nursing faculty?

  • Translating medical terms into regular words so that non-medical people can understand them. Any nurse can do that, but I've been doing it for a really long time — 38 years to be exact, and for 26 of those years, it was my job specifically to teach medical terms, concepts, and practices to students studying to be professional nurses.

  • Working quickly and efficiently to organize and analyze large volumes of information and documents to complete the products, reports, or other assignments.

  • Public speaking.  I'm not afraid to speak to people whether at large groups or one- on- one, whether speaking to a lecture hall full of terrified nursing students on their first day; a conference full of people looking for leadership advice; or a courtroom anxiously awaiting my professional analysis. I have been an international- level speaker and I can organize my thoughts and speak logically and in a way that keeps the listeners interested.

  • Experience with accreditation, reviewing the documents and the standards, and assessing the entity being accredited to see what needs to be done to reach those standards.  Accreditation reports are written so that non-medical and non-nursing audiences can read and understand them.

  • Knowledge of nursing curriculum, the nursing standards, and requirements of nurses at different levels to be able to practice their profession.

  • The flexibility of my schedule and my hours, making it easy to adapt to multiple clients.

I am thrilled to start this phase of my career, and to use my experience and expertise in the best way to benefit other businesses!  Feel free to contact me, and stay tuned!
