Renae Schumann, PhD, RN, CLNC, CNE Dr. Renae Schumann has been a nurse for nearly 40 years, working in the fields of emergency care, med-surg and community health before entering academia; and legal nurse consulting (plaintiff and defense medical malpractice) while also working as an associate professor.  Dr. Schumann has been a nurse educator and administrator for more than 25 years and is familiar with the issues surrounding the nursing shortage, the nursing faculty shortage, the intensity of nursing school, and the needs of nursing students.  As Dean of a college of nursing and allied health for eight years, Dr. Schumann facilitated student, faculty, and program increases.  She taught BSN and MSN students; began nursing curriculum assessment evaluation; launched new Bachelor of Science degrees in nursing and kinesiology; launched two masters degrees; received funding from donors; submitted grant proposals; presented at conferences; published; served on institutional committees; and served on professional committees and boards.   Dr. Schumann is an experienced mentor for nurses at various stages of their careers.  She is a mentor for new nurses through the American Nurses Association; and a mentor for new nursing deans.  She is an influencer and is active in multiple local, state, national, and international organizations.       She served the American Nurses Association (ANA) on the Bylaws Committee; she serves the Texas Nurses Association (TNA) as a member of the Education and Workforce Planning Workgroup, the Leadership Succession Committee, and delegate to the ANA Membership Assembly; and the TNA District 9 (D9) as delegate to the TNA House of Delegates, and as the District 9 (Houston area) President from 2021-2022. Throughout her career, Dr. Schumann has received numerous awards for her teaching, scholarship, and volunteerism including the Good Samaritan Foundation’s “Excellence in Nursing for Instruction in an Education Setting” Award as the inaugural recipient in 2006, and the Distinguished Alumni Award for 2012-2013 from her two-time alma mater, The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston School of Nursing. Dr. Schumann’s mission for Schumann Nurse Consulting, LLC is to provide services for clients — attorneys, schools, and hospital nursing education departments — that will contribute to their success in legal cases and accreditation efforts.

Dr. Renae Schumann has been a nurse for nearly 40 years, working in the fields of emergency care, med-surg nursing, community health, and academia. In Emergency Care she was a charge nurse and a nurse preceptor at Ben Taub’s Level 1 Trauma Center.  In the community she was Director of Congregational Outreach for Memorial Hermann Healthcare System, where she assessed and implemented Parish Nursing or Health Ministry programs in churches across Southeast Texas.  She developed various assessment instruments and care models for health ministries and became an international presenter and a leader in the field. She published several articles and three book chapters related to parish nursing.  

Dr. Schumann has been a nurse educator and nursing education administrator for more than 25 years. She is familiar with the issues surrounding the nursing shortage, the nursing faculty shortage, the intensity of the nursing school way of life, the needs of nursing students and faculty, and the issues surrounding the transition from student nurse to professional nurse.  

At UT Health (now Cizik School of Nursing) she held multiple leadership roles including BSN Coordinator, Chair of the Nursing Scholarship Committee, developer of the Nursing Honors Program (matching students to faculty research interests), and Chair of the Baccalaureate Degree Council.  She taught primarily first and second semester BSN students in med-surg content. She received nearly $4 million in educational and scholarship grants for the traditional BSN, accelerated BSN, and RN-BSN programs.  She was active in multiple professional organizations including the Zeta Pi Chapter (UT) of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society, and she held various positions and offices. During that time, she was a legal nurse consultant for plaintiff and defense medical malpractice cases. 

After UT Houston, as Dean for nearly eight years at Houston Baptist University, Dr. Schumann facilitated student, faculty, and program increases.  She taught BSN and MSN students, began nursing curriculum assessment evaluation, launched new Bachelor of Science degrees in nursing and kinesiology, launched two master’s degrees, received funding from donors, submitted grant proposals, presented at conferences, published, served on institutional committees, and served on professional committees and boards.   She worked with the Texas Board of Nursing to prepare students for entry into nursing school, prepare students to sit for the RN licensing exam, and to prepare for the development of the new nurse practitioner degree. 

She serves on the Texas Center for Nursing Workforce Studies Advisory Board; the Texas Nurses Association (TNA) as a member of the Education and Workforce Planning Workgroup, the Leadership Succession Committee, and delegate to the ANA Membership Assembly; and the TNA District 9 (D9) as delegate to the TNA House of Delegates, and as the District 9 (Houston area) President from 2021-2022. 

Throughout her career, Dr. Schumann has received numerous awards for her teaching, scholarship, and volunteerism. Her mission for Schumann Nurse Consulting, LLC is to contribute to the success of attorney clients who work with professional license defense, medical malpractice, personal injury, or workers compensation cases by translating nursing and medical terminology into understandable and real-person terms and applying them to legal cases.
